Bill made a plate for himself, checked the safety on his guns, and took one last glance at the monitors. ”īill waited for Frank to question the safety of the wheat, but Frank seemingly had no qualms about eating bread. “God, is this sourdough?” Frank sniffed the plate and sighed with reverence. A rookie mistake.īill slid a thick slice of bread and the cooked omelet onto a plate, then garnished the eggs with a sprinkle of chopped green onions. He was so focused on outside invaders that he had let his guard down inside the house. Bill forced himself to turn away, internally chiding himself. Frank had such a delighted expression that Bill was momentarily taken aback by the sheer happiness in Frank’s face. In a horror movie, this would be the point where he would be screaming at the protagonist to watch out for the killers outside.īill turned to see Frank leaning against the door of the kitchen. He still had a nagging suspicion that there were raiders coming, and he didn’t want to be caught unaware and unarmed. Last night was wonderful, but he knew better than anyone that life wasn’t a fairy tale. Bill shucked on some clothes, strapped on a couple of guns, and went outside to feed the chickens and collect the eggs.īill made breakfast with one eye on the monitors. Frank only twitched a bit, then rolled over to take over the last bit of bed Bill had vacated. Somehow during the night, Frank had managed to not only steal both pillows, but also had took up nearly two-thirds of the bed.īill extracted himself from the tangled covers and glared at Frank suspiciously. Frank was completely relaxed and unguarded, snoring loudly with his jaw agape. He lay in bed breathing quietly, listening for any movement, until finally the lavender of the dawn softened into the pink of morning.īill eyed Frank on the bed beside him. Taking one man into his house was risky he knew that Frank could be a Trojan horse, that there could be more outside waiting for a signal to attack in the dead of night. He didn’t get through the goddamned apocalypse by letting his guard down.
